MarketPrice Pussycat Dolls promotion!

We have just opened the Pussycat Dolls promotion to our beta testers.

We want you to tell us the market price for a Pussycat Dolls double-pass! Here’s the deal:

We have a double-pass for sale at a steadily-decreasing price. We will drop the price in increments a few times a day, every day leading up to the concert.

Anybody can buy the double-pass at any time by hitting the “Buy Now” button, however, we have a feeling you will want to wait as long as possible to see how low we’ll go!

Here’s the kicker: if the double-pass does not sell by Thursday 14th May, we will offer it to the top Wanted price in this Market at some point during that day. So it might pay to list a Wanted price - as downright low as you like - while checking the ever-dropping price!

Truly yours
Alexey, Anil, Mike, Tim

Coldplay promotion results!

The results of the MarketPrice Coldplay ticket promotion are in! We asked our beta testers: “Who wants it the most?” Two people came out tops to score themselves a Coldplay double-pass each!

Congratulations to users “themungus” and “Fiona”! You beat out others’ listings to come out tops in our Markets for tickets to Coldplay concerts on Wednesday and Thursday. The pair used the MarketPrice Wanted Listing feature, which shakes things up by letting sellers make offers to buyers, - so we came and we offered the tickets to them at their price! And, boy did we shake things up! Their prices were an absolute bargain!

Congratulations to the winners, and a huge thanks to all the testers who have been poring over every aspect of our new site and diligently reporting issues. We appreciate your efforts!

Truly yours
Alexey, Anil, Mike, Tim

MarketPrice Private Beta & Coldplay promotion!

The MarketPrice private beta is live! To be totally honest, it’s been live for about the last month and we’ve been fixing niggling issues here and there. It’s amazing how many small problems we come across every day, and being the perfectionists that we are, how much time we devote to fixing them. The plan was to invite our friends & family for a private beta test as soon as the site was live, but we didn’t end up being comfortable with the state of it until about three weeks later. So here we are!

What is MarketPrice anyway?

MarketPrice is New Zealand’s ticket exchange - you can buy and sell concert tickets, sports tickets and other event tickets in a well-organised, fair and safe way. Broadly speaking, we are like an auction site, but don’t tell anyone we said that! We let users buy & sell tickets on the site, but that’s where the similarity ends. Because we do more work for you and organise our site better, we:

  • Pre-fabricate listings (Markets), including the description and photo. Traders are left to simply find their Market and list a price!
  • Let all buyers and sellers of the same kind of item trade openly on the same page, in a single Market
  • Determine a fair market price as a guide to buyers and sellers
  • Provide a less cluttered, more intuitive marketplace

There’s more information in our About MarketPrice page.

MarketPrice is now in a private beta period until April 30 2009. During beta, all trades on the site are fictional (except the Coldplay promo - read more below). It’s a sandpit for our testers to play in without being restricted by legal obligations. The site is open to public viewing, but registrations are by invitation only.  We are keeping access restricted to give us a good chance to break-in the server and fix any issues without affecting real trades. We’d like to hear all your feedback, so talk to one of us directly, or contact us through MarketPrice.

Did you say Coldplay?
As part of the MarketPrice beta test, we have been running a Coldplay promotion. Our testers got the chance to ask themselves ‘How much would I pay to see Coldplay live?’ - being our friends & family, some of the answers stunned and surprised us. However the less obscene ones made it on the site in the form of ‘Wanted’ listings for the Coldplay concert ticket Markets here and here. The promo comes to an end at 10pm Thursday 12 March, when we will sell the 2x double passes to the highest Wanted price - even if it is just $40!

Truly yours

Where does marketprice stand on scalping?

We have not launched MarketPrice yet, but since announcing our intent to let people resell tickets online our team has been fielding questions from friends and family about where MarketPrice stands on scalping.

The answer is: we care about those who miss out! We are concentrating on providing you with the best, safe, transparent and easy-to-use market for tickets, because missing out at the box office is often the unfortunate reality.

We are trying to solve the problem that we, as concert-goers and sports fans, have often encountered ourselves. What happens when the show sells out, but you really want to go? What about the finals? You beat yourself up for not getting in line sooner, you get annoyed at yourself for not logging on in time and you curse at the venue for being small.

But you shouldn’t be blaming yourself. The reality is, with Auckland becoming more and more metropolitan and our population increasing, it will be more and more difficult to be the first in line. The simple fact is: we are competing with more people for tickets, and while there will always be those who get to the box office in time, there will be more and more of those who miss out. Unfortunately, it’s the reality of a growing population!

We’ve been there and we know it’s a sore issue! We also know the misery in the current state of the online ticket resale market. In the current market, we don’t know how many tickets there are for sale and we have no idea how many people are after those tickets, so we end up paying a price based on pure speculation. The current market is in dire need of consolidation and clarity!

Now, imagine a market where we can buy a ticket on the spot, based on a market price established by the market. It’s fair supply and demand in action. It’s also what will get us to the concert the next time we miss out. That’s why we are creating the best, safe, transparent and easy-to-use market for tickets in New Zealand!

marketprice does concert tickets!

What do you get when you mash up online ticket sales and the share market? - Why, MarketPrice, of course! The project we have been hard at work on is just such a mash-up. MarketPrice is all about event and concert tickets online!

Have you ever wanted to buy tickets online when the concert sold out? Did you ever buy concert tickets, only to find that you could not go? Then you’ve probably dealt with the problems inherent in online tickets resale. Whether you tried to sell tickets, or buy tickets, you probably found the online auction process lengthy, drawn-out and confusing. Well then, you might find MarketPrice very useful; you are in our target market, so to speak.

If you tried to sell a concert ticket online, you took a risk. You did not know whether anybody would buy it before the show, so you took a risk setting your reserve price, hoping it’s low enough to attract a buyer and yet high enough to recoup your money.

If you tried to buy a concert ticket at an auction, you had wasted a lot of time doing it. Searching through an auction site was a bit like sifting through a toy drawer. - It’s disorganised, so you clicked through various listings before you could even start the bid process. And even then you were not assured of getting a ticket.

We are creating a legitimate, safe, and transparent market especially for event and concert tickets. MarketPrice will provide a unified market for each of your concerts; a single place to trade tickets for each event and concert. This is better in three ways:

  1. MarketPrice eliminates risky guesswork by providing market statistics, such as ticket sale volumes and ticket price trends.
  2. MarketPrice makes it easy to find the event or concert you’re looking for.
  3. The MarketPrice market mechanisms speed up the trade process.

We are currently hard at work on the site and expect to be able to reveal more in the coming weeks!
